It was just some boring day in August when I was sitting at home, thinking what the heck I could do with my remaining vacation time in October, as the telephone rang. "Hey Seppi, it's Boby. Did I tell you that you're gonna fly to Canada this fall?"
Almut Sohn and Fabse Krummreich, two German kayak friends, are livinging in Montreal for a whole year. They sent us an invitation including free accomodations in their flat just 5 walking minutes away from the put-in of Lachine, where one the best waves I've ever surfed was running.
We, that is Boby Frieser, his cousin Wastl, Diggler Wittenbrink and I, arrived Canada on Oktober 6 having two amazing weeks full of kayaking ahead of us. Thanks to Almut and Fabi, it was cheap and easy living for us. During the days we went on the fleuve Saint-Laurent and the evenings we spent watching DVDs or going out in Montreal.
Local guide Almut told us about Canadian history, showed us the best pubs downtown and intruduced us into Canadian cuisine. Hey, I can really recommend the national dish, poutine, which is kind of French Fries mixed up with fatty souce and cheese. Hmmm :oD!
But after five days of non-stop freestyle paddling it was time for us to see more than just a wave. Local kayakers told us about some "Moose Riverfestival" taking place in New York State this weekend just a few hours away. So we decided to get a rental car and give it a try. But first German art of engineering came into play when we had to build a roof rack for the rental out of wooden battens, foam, tape and straps. Thirsday evening we left Montreal and just after midnight we arrived at the US border. For all of us it was the first time visiting the States. And, as common for Europeans, we went there by car ;o). What we experienced then, you can find out here Some more kayaking photos:
